How to Unsend iMessages on Mac in macOS Sonoma

Have you ever accidentally sent an iMessage to someone and had to say sorry to the recipient out of huge embarrassment? Well, it’s not just you who have faced this frustrating situation as many of us have gone through it at some point or the other. Fortunately, Apple has come up with a better way to deal with it. That said, here is how you can unsend iMessages on Mac.

Unsend Messages in Apple Messages App on Mac

Deleting an already sent iMessage on Mac is as straightforward as it is on iOS 16 or iPadOS 16. However, there are some important things that you need to keep in mind before using this messaging feature.

  • Both the sender and recipients must have iOS 16/iPadOS 16 macOS 13 or later to take advantage of this feature.
  • If you unsend the already sent iMessage and the recipient is using iOS 15 or earlier versions, they will continue to see the original message.
  • Apple allows you to unsend an iMessage for only up to 15 minutes.
  • It’s important to note that if the recipient who received the original message is on iOS 16 or later, they will get a notification in the thread that a message was unsent. From a privacy perspective, this is very disappointing but that’s the harsh reality that you need to keep in mind.
  • Hence, the recipient will know that you have deleted the sent message. However, they won’t be able to find out what the message was or see the preview of the original message.

Delete Already Sent iMessages on Mac

Step 1. First off, open the Apple Messages app on your Mac.

Step 2. Now, open a conversation thread.

Step 3. Next, right-click or control-click on the already sent message that you would like to delete.

Step 4. Choose, Undo Send in the popup menu and you are pretty much done.

The sent iMessage will instantly disappear with a cool animation. You can repeat the same quick steps to delete more sent iMessages on your macOS device.

Signing off…

That’s all about unsending an iMessage on Mac. Though this feature works as expected, it would be better if Apple offered a way to keep the deletion of the message discrete from a privacy perspective. What do you have to say about my suggestion?
