Fix iPhone Lock Screen Controls Not Working in iOS 18

Having faced this issue on a few occasions, I must say that it’s the botched-up configuration that causes the quick action buttons to malfunction. Apart from this main culprit, things like software slitches and the unresponsive screen protector could also be in the reckoning.

1. Hard Reset Your iPhone

To begin with, try force resetting your iPhone. If the Lock Screen controls are misbehaving due to a minor software glitch, the force restart may help resolve the issue.

2. Clean the Touchscreen with a Soft Lint-Free Cloth

Many a time, it’s the pileup of dust, smudge, or fingerprints that tend to come in the way and prevent the touchscreen from responding to the touch gestures. Therefore, make sure to clean the touchscreen with a soft cloth to ensure no particles of dust are lurking around and preventing the fingers from making responsive contact with the screen.

3. Remove the Screen Guard

If the Lock Screen buttons still don’t respond to the touch, remove the screen guard. It’s no secret that the worn-out screen guards tend to become unresponsive. Therefore, get rid of the old screen defender and long-press on a quick action button to check if it responds to the touch. If it does, the problem is with your screen guard and not the quick-action buttons.

4. Make Sure You Have Properly Set Up the Related Feature

Keep in mind that some Lock Screen controls don’t work until you have properly set up the related features. For instance, if the Music Haptics feature is disabled or hasn’t been set up perfectly, the Music Haptics control may appear to be greyed out or won’t trigger with a long press. As it has caused headaches for me on many occasions, I can guarantee the aftereffect of this lesser-known villain.

5. Remove All the Lock Screen Controls and Add the Different Ones

Should the problem persist, remove all the controls from the Lock Screen and add different ones.

  • To do so, trigger the Lock Screen by pressing the power button -> Authenticate your device -> long-press on the screen -> Customise button -> Lock Screen.
Choose Lock Screen for customization
  • To remove a control, tap on the minus button -> plus button.

  • Now, restart your iPhone and check if the controls have started to behave on the expected line.

6. Update Software

If nothing has brought the misfiring controls back on track, update the software as there might be a wicked software bug in the play.

  • To update the software on your iPhone, go to the Settings app -> General -> Software Update -> If an update is available, download and install it by agreeing to Apple’s licensing terms and conditions.

7. Factory Reset Your iPhone

In terms of resolving the frustrating iOS issues, the factory reset has a legendary status. Hence, it would be a mistake to give this trusted solution a miss. If you are afraid of this radical solution, note that it only eliminates the custom settings such as your Home Screen layout and Wi-Fi passwords. All the pivotal data including your photos, files, and music remain secure.

  • To factory reset your iPhone, launch the Settings app -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset All Settings.
Reset All Settings
  • Once your device has rebooted, bring up the Lock Screen and press and hold onto a Lock Screen button to figure out if you have eventually overcome the hurdle.
  • I hope you have sorted out the issue for good.
