To get going, let’s sort out the fundamental questions for a clear understanding!
So, What Are the Requirements for Turning a Voice Memo into iPhone Ringtone?
The easiest way to convert a recording into a custom iPhone ringtone is to use the Apple GarageBand app. The app is available for free and requires iOS 18 or later. That means you must have an iPhone XR/XS or later to use the GarageBand app.
So, to get started, make sure to download GarageBand app on your iPhone. We will use this handy app to trim the recording and export it as a ringtone. Once you have fine-tuned the recording to your liking, setting it as a custom iPhone ringtone becomes dead simple.
Is There Any Catch That You Need to Keep in Mind?
Bear in mind that the length of your recording must be under 40 seconds. Otherwise, the GarageBand app will automatically shorten the recording.
While it’s not downside per se, make sure your iPhone has sufficient space as GarageBand is 1.7GB in size. That all being said, let’s get started with the quick steps!
What If Your iPhone Doesn’t Support GarageBand App?
For folks who can’t use the GarageBand app due to incompatibility, there is a workaround. There are many third-party tools that offer a straightforward way to convert a voice memo into an iPhone ringtone. But bear in mind that most of them are paid and require you to use a computer.
Step 1. Save the Recording to the Files App
- First off, open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone.
- After that, either record new audio or choose an existing one.
- Then, tap on the tiny triple-dot icon (aka ellipsis icon) next to a recording and select Save to Files. Next, save the recording to the desired location in the Files app.
Step 2. Use GarageBand App to Edit the Recording
- Next, launch the GarageBand app on your iPhone.
- After that, choose a preferred instrument like a drum, keyboard, guitar, etc. Since the steps for any instrument are the same, you have the freedom to pick your favorite. I’m going ahead with my favorite “Keyboard”. What about you?
- Then, tap on the tiny project icon at the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Next up, select the loop icon at the upper right corner of the screen.
- Up next, make sure that the Files tab is selected at the top center.
- Now, tap on the Browse items from the Files app and then head over to the audio recording you have just saved.
- Now, tap on the audio recording to ensure it shows inside the project menu.
- After that, make sure to drop the audio recording as the second track right after the instrument you have selected.
Then after, precisely drag the handle to trim the recording. After you have trimmed the recording, you can play it by hitting the play button at the top to check whether or not it’s perfect.
It’s worth pointing out that if you don’t like metronome, you can turn it off with ease. To do so, tap on the metronome icon that appears to the right of the “record” button.
As already stated above, be sure to keep the length of the recording under 40 seconds.
Step 3. Export Your Recording As iPhone Ringtone
- Once you have trimmed the recording, tap on the tiny downward arrow that shows at the top left corner of the screen and select My Songs.
- Now, the GarageBand project will show inside the Recents tab. Simply, long-press on the project and select Share in the menu.
- Next, choose Ringtone to export your recording as a custom iPhone ringtone.
- Next up, give a suitable name to the ringtone and hit the Export button located at the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 4. Time to Use Your Audio Recording As Custom iPhone Ringtone
- Once you have exported the audio recording as the ringtone, select “Use sound as…” to set it as the default ringtone of your iPhone.
- After that, you can choose to set it as Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone, or Assign it to Contact. Now, select the preferred option and you are all set!
- What if you don’t want to set the ringtone straightaway? Don’t worry! Just tap on Done to add the ringtone to the list of existing ringtones.
- If you ever want to bring this custom ringtone into play, head over to the Settings app -> Sounds & Haptics-> scroll down and then select the ringtone.
