With iOS 26, Apple has finally introduced a simple and straightforward way to set a custom ringtone from a voice memo—without needing GarageBand or a Mac. This means you can now turn your personal recordings, funny voice notes, or sound effects into ringtones in just a few taps, right from your iPhone.
Step 1: Prepare the Audio File
First, ensure that the audio you want to use is in MP3 or M4A format and no longer than 30 seconds. iOS doesn’t support longer clips for ringtones. You can trim your audio using third-party editing apps or record a new one directly using the Voice Memos app.
Note:
- Songs from Apple Music can’t be used as ringtones, even if you’re a subscriber.
- This method only works with audio files that support the iOS Share Sheet, such as Voice Memos or supported third-party apps.
- Once your audio clip is ready in the Voice Memos app, tap on the three-dot icon next to the recording you want to use. From the menu, select Share.

- When the iOS Share Sheet appears, tap the More option, then choose Use as Ringtone. iOS 26 will automatically convert the clip into the proper ringtone format and take you straight to the ringtone settings screen.

- You’ll now see a preview of your new ringtone and can choose whether to use it as your default ringtone, assign it to a contact, or just save it.
Step 3: Select Your Ringtone
To set or change it later, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. You’ll find your custom ringtone listed at the top. Tap it to make it your default.
That’s it! With iOS 26, Apple has made it incredibly easy to personalize your iPhone’s ringtone using your own voice or favorite audio clip—no GarageBand or computer required. It’s the perfect way to make your device truly your own.
