Mute Your iPhone Using a Vocal Shortcut in iOS 18
So long as you are willing to experiment, you can craft a wide range of fascinating vocal shortcuts. While trying to dig into this all-new feature, I ran into this shortcut and found it worth sharing.
- To get started, open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and choose Accessibility.
- Under the Speech section, select the Vocal Shortcuts option to proceed.
- Now, tap on the “Add Action” button to create a shortcut. If you are new to this feature, hit the “Set Up Vocal Shortcuts” option.
- Scroll down to the System section and choose “Mute”.
- Enter the custom phrase such as “Mute” and hit the Go button to continue.
- Next, you have to speak the Mute custom phrase (or whatever you have input) three times so that it gets verified.
- On the last screen, you will be informed that the shortcut is ready. Tap on “Continue”.
From now on, whenever you want to mute your iPhone, simply speak the custom phrase and that’s about it!
Having used dozens of vocal shortcuts, I must say that it’s a welcome addition to iOS. As compared to Siri shortcuts and the back-tap shortcuts, the vocal shortcuts are more reliable and work with better efficiency. No wonder they have turned out to be one of the most loved iOS 18 features.
Manage Vocal Shortcuts on Your iPhone or iPad
As iOS 18 offers a neat way to manage the vocal shortcuts, you can manage the list with ease. To get rid of a shortcut, tap on the Edit button at the top right corner of the screen -> hit the red minus button, and tap on the Delete button.
What If Vocal Shortcuts are Not Working on Your Device?
If the Vocal Shortcuts are malfunctioning on your iPhone, ensure that you have perfectly set up and verified the shortcuts. Failing to do that will leave your shortcuts crippled. Should the issue persist, disable/enable it. To get it done, navigate to the Settings app -> Accessibility -> Vocal Shortcuts and turn it off. Then, reboot your iOS device and turn it on.
