How to Lock Notes on Mac in macOS Sequoia 15

Private notes deserve an extra layer of safeguard in order to ward off unauthorized access. That’s why both the Notes app for iOS and macOS allow you to lock your notes to prevent anyone from unlocking them. So, if you have decided to shield your sensitive information or the ideas that you have jotted down, follow along as I show you how to lock notes on your Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later.

Right Way to Lock Notes on Mac in macOS Sequoia 15

Apple Notes app for macOS allows you to lock your notes with the administrator password and Touch ID. Hence, you don’t have to create separate passwords for your notes. As a result, there is very less chance of forgetting the passwords. From a convenience perspective, this is a welcome move, especially for folks who prefer to have a painless way to deal with passwords. 

Step 1. First off, launch the Notes app on your Mac.

Step 2. Now, open the note that you would like to lock. 

Step 3. Next, click on the File menu at the top left corner of the screen. 

Step 4. Next up, choose Lock Note in the drop-down menu.

Important: Alternatively, just right/control+click on the note in question and choose Lock Note in the menu.

Step 5. Up next, enter your administrator password. 

Step 6. Make sure to enable Touch ID as well in order to easily unlock your note using biometric authentication. 

That’s it! You have successfully locked your note. From now onwards, you will need to enter your administrator password or authenticate using Touch ID to unlock the note. Needless to say, you can repeat the same steps to lock more notes.

Remove Lock from a Note on Mac 

Later, if you ever want to remove a lock from a note, you can do so without any hassle. 

Step 1. To get started, launch the Notes app and then navigate to the note from which you want to remove the lock. 

Step 2. Now, click on the File menu at the top left corner of the screen. 

Step 3. Next, click on Remove Lock in the drop-down menu and you are good to go!

Sticky Note: Alternately, right/control+click on the note and choose the Remove Lock option in the menu.
