How to Fix Arrow Keys Not Working in Windows Laptop Keyboard
It’s worth highlighting upfront that the arrow keys tend to misbehave due to several reasons. The problem typically crops up because Num Lock, Scroll Lock, or Function Lock changes how certain keys behave. It can also occur due to dust, dirt, or physical debris trapped under the keys, preventing proper input. Notably, at times, the problem is also caused by outdated keyboard drivers, Windows bugs, or incorrect keyboard settings like Filter Keys being enabled.
On some laptops, arrow keys share secondary functions, so pressing the wrong Fn combination can disable them. In more serious cases, the keyboard may have hardware damage, liquid exposure, or loose internal connections, which can stop the arrow keys from responding completely.
1. Check If Scroll Lock Is Enabled
On certain keyboards, activating Scroll Lock changes how arrow keys behave, especially in apps like Excel. Instead of moving between cells, the screen may scroll, making it seem like the keys are not working. Hence, make sure to check if the scroll lock is active.
- Look for a Scroll Lock (ScrLk) key on your keyboard.
- Press the Scroll Lock key once to toggle it off.
- If your keyboard doesn’t have this key, open the On-Screen Keyboard by searching it in the Start menu.
- Locate and click the ScrLk key to disable it.
- Test the arrow keys again to see if they respond normally.
2. Restart Your Laptop
Temporary system glitches or background process conflicts can interfere with keyboard input. Restarting refreshes the system and clears minor bugs.
- On your PC, head over to Start menu > Power icon > Restart.
- After that, be sure to wait for the laptop to reboot fully.
- Check if the arrow keys start working again.
3. Turn Off Filter Keys

Keep in mind that dust, debris, or physical damage can block key movement or prevent proper contact, causing keys to stop responding.
- To begin, turn off your laptop completely.
- After that, gently clean around the arrow keys using compressed air or a soft brush.
- Now, check if any key feels stuck or loose and then turn your laptop back on.
7. Disable Gaming Mode or Keyboard Software
Do you know that some laptops or third-party keyboard software include gaming modes that tend to disable certain keys to prevent accidental presses? That’s why I’d recommend you turn off the gaming mode or the keyboard software.
- To do so, launch any keyboard-related software installed on your laptop.
- Up next, look for Gaming Mode or key customization settings.
- Disable any feature that blocks arrow keys > make sure to save the changes.
- In the end, try testing the keys again.
8. Run Windows Keyboard Troubleshooter
Windows includes built-in troubleshooters that detect and fix hardware-related issues automatically.
- On your PC, head over to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find the Keyboard troubleshooter > hit Run next to it and then follow the on-screen instructions.
