How to Create and Use Collaborative Apple Music Playlist on Mac

With the release of macOS Sonoma 14.3, the “Collaborative Apple Music playlist” has become a reality. That means you can now share your favorite playlist with your friends or loved ones and collaborate on it. Each participant can add, remove, and also rearrange music in the playlist in line with their taste. What’s more, a collaborative playlist also offers a neat way to react with emojis to songs for a more fun-loving music-listening experience. Collaborate on a Playlist in Apple Music on Mac

As a host, you are always in complete control of your shared playlist. To ensure no one is able to sneak into the collaborative playlist without your permission, Apple Music offers you the flexibility to approve participants. Aside from allowing you to set up approvals, the stock music app also lets you stop collaborating with ease, if you ever decide to stop sharing your playlist with anyone or prevent others from making changes to it.

Make an Apple Music Collaborative Playlist on Mac

  • To get started, launch the Music app on your Mac.
  • Now, select a playlist in the sidebar. 
  • After that, click on the Collaboration Management button to proceed.

  • If you want to approve collaborators before they can join, make sure to turn on the toggle next to Approve Collaborators. Note that if you don’t enable this option, anyone with the link will be able to join your collaborative playlist. 
  • Then, click on the Start Collaborating option.

  • Next, you can choose how you wish to share the playlist. For example, you can share the invite using Messages, Mail, or even AirDrop depending on your convenience.

  • Once you have added people to the collaborative playlist, click on the Done button.

From now onwards, whenever a new person requests to join your collaborative playlist, notifications will show up in the top-right corner of the screen. 

Add More People to Your Collaborative Apple Music Playlist 

Adding people to a collaborative playlist is dead simple. If the host hasn’t enabled the “Approve Collaborators”, anyone can invite others to join the playlist by just sharing the link.

  • To begin with, open the Music app on your Mac and then select the collaborative playlist in the sidebar. It’s important to point out that a collaborative playlist features a collaborate icon next to its name. 
  • After that, hit the Collaboration Management button.
  • Now, click on the Share Invite Link and then go through the usual steps to invite others to collaborate on a playlist. 
  • In the end, make sure to hit the Done button to confirm. 

Manage shared settings for a collaborative playlist 

1. Head over to the Music app on your macOS device and choose the collaborative playlist in the sidebar. 

2. Hit the Collaboration Management button and then select the desired option.

  • To invite others with a link hit the Share Invite Link. Keep in mind that if you don’t enable “Approve Collaborators”, anyone collaborating on the playlist will able to share the link to the collaborative playlist. 
  • To Require collaborators to be approved, be sure to turn on the toggle next to Approve Collaborators. 
  • To accept a request, hit the Accept Request button to let the person join the collaborative playlist. 
  • Hit Approve All to accept all requests at once.
  • To decline a request, hit the Decline Request button if you don’t want the person to join your collaborative Apple Music playlist.

Remove a Collaborator from Apple Music Playlist on Mac 

1. Navigate to the Music app on your Mac -> collaborative playlist in the sidebar. 

2. Now, click on the Collaboration Management button. 

  • To remove a collaborator, just hover the pointer over the collaborator’s name and hit the More button.
  • After that, click on Remove Collaborator and confirm.

Stop Collaborating in Apple Music Playlist

  • On your Mac, fire up the Music -> Collaborative playlist -> Collaboration Management.
  • Finally, click on Stop. When prompted, click on Stop again to finish.

Remove Yourself from a Collaborative Apple Music Playlist 

  • Open the Music app on your Mac -> select Collaborative Playlist -> Collaboration Management button.
  • Now, click on Leave and confirm the action.
