How to Change File Extensions on iPhone and iPad (2023)

Did you ever need to change file extensions on your iPhone or iPad and were left disappointed to know that there was no built-in way to do so? Well, Apple has listened to your wish by offering a hassle-free way to rename file extensions right into the stock file manager app. As you may have already guessed, that’s exactly what I’m going to show you in this hands-on guide!

Change File Extensions on iPad & iPhone

What happens when you change file extensions using the Apple Files app? Well, let me break it down for you to ensure there is no longer confusion lurking around.

It’s worth pointing out that changing a file extension does not change the file type itself. All it does is just change the file association. For instance, if you happen to change the file extension of .pdf to .png, it will not convert the PDF file into a PNG. Note that it will just change the app in which the file will attempt to open on your device.

Times when an app on your device can only open specific files like JPG images but your images are in the PNG format, you can change the file extension to .jpg to get the job done.
