Fix Laptop Running Slow After the Windows 11 24H2 Update

From cluttered storage to outdated drivers to software glitches to extravagant visual effects, there could be more than one reason why your Windows device is moving like a turtle.

1. Manage Startup Programs and Apps Perfectly

It’s always recommended to take control of the Startup apps in order to enhance performance.

  • On your PC, head to the Start button -> Settings -> Apps -> Startup -> turn off all apps listed here.
  • Alternatively, press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open Task Manager.
  • Choose the Startup tab in the left sidebar -> right click on each app and ensure that the “Disabled” option is selected.
  • After that, restart your computer to implement the change.

2. Disable Location Tracking

The non-stop location tracking not only gobbles up a lot of battery but also causes a laptop (or smartphone) to overheat or become slow.

  • On your PC, fire up the Settings app -> Privacy & Security -> Location -> Location Services -> turn it off (or allow only a few precious apps/services to access your location data).

3. Check for Additional Updates

It’s worth pointing out that many a time the initial update doesn’t contain all the required fixes. Therefore, make sure to check for additional updates and install them without any delay.

  • Dive into the Start button -> Settings -> Windows Update -> Check for updates.
  • If there are updates available, install them.

4. Update Device Drivers

If your Windows device is dealing with outdated drivers, I suspect they could very well be causing the problem.

  • Press the WIN+X keys -> Select Device Manager > Right-click on devices (such as Display adapters, Network adapters) -> Update driver.

5. Update All Apps

Keeping apps updated can go a long way in helping your PC run smoothly. Thus, make sure to update all the outdated apps.

  • On your PC, launch the Microsoft Store app -> Library tab-> Get Updates and update all apps.

6. Free Up Disk Space

One of the major reasons why a PC tends to become slow is the lack of sufficient disk space.

  • Go to the Start button -> Settings -> System -> Storage.
  • Having inspected the storage status, take all the necessary steps such as cleaning up the useless files, deleting redundant apps, and getting rid of unwanted screenshots/videos to recover as much free disk space as possible.

7. Disable Visual Effects

Without an iota of doubt, visual effects are pretty sleek \

  • Navigate to the Start button Settings -> System -> About -> Advanced system settings.
  • In the Performance section, select Settings -> Adjust for best performance or fine-tune the visual effects to your liking.

8. Perform a Clean Boot

“Clean Boot” has long been a reliable way to find the third-party app that is creating a problem.

  • To do so, press Win + R -> enter msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Dive into the Services tab -> Hide all Microsoft services -> Hit Disable all.
  • Then, restart your computer.

9. Check for Malware

It’s no secret that malware also tends to cause slow-downs. Therefore, perform a thorough scan to nab the threats and eliminate them.

  • To get it done, make use of a built-in Windows Security or third-party antivirus software to perform a full scan and eliminate all the detected threats right away.

10. Update BIOS/UEFI

Outdated BIOS or UEFI tends to cause a variety of issues including sluggishness. Hence, try updating the BIOS on your device. As the process for updating BIOS may vary from one manufacturer’s device to another, visit your manufacturer’s website for help.

11. Revert the Update – Last Resort

Haven’t yet been able to speed up your PC? If the answer is “Yes”, try reverting the update.

  • To do so, go to the Start button -> Settings -> Windows Update -> Update history -> Uninstall updates.
  • Now, select the latest update and uninstall it.
