Fix Unable to Redeem Apple Gift Cards on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

In most cases, getting the basics right resolves the issues related to redemption code. Hence, we will first focus on ticking off the fundamental things. Should the problem persist, it would be better to check related compatibility and also ensure that your internet connection is up to the mark. There are some other roadblocks as well, which we will discuss later, and look for the right ways to get rid of them. 

1. Scan the Redemption Code Using Your Device’ Camera or Enter It Manually

  • To get started, access the 16-digit code that appears on the back of the card.
  • On your iPhone or iPad, launch the App Store app -> your profile -> Redeem Gift Card or Code.
  • Now, you can use your iPhone’s camera to scan the redemption code or enter the code manually. After that, follow the usual instructions to complete the process.

2. Scan the Redemption Code Using Your Mac’s Camera or Enter It Manually

To get going, check the 16-digit code on the back of the card. Note that on some gift cards, you may need to scratch off or peel the label to view the code. 

  • Then, head over to the App Store on your Mac -> click on your name -> Redeem Gift Card.

  • To begin with, reveal the 16-digit code on the back of the card. Then, launch iTunes -> click on the Account menu at the top.
  • After that, click on Redeem -> Sign in
  • Now, follow the instructions to redeem the card. 

4. Quick Way to Redeem Apple Gift Card on Your Android Device 

  • Once you have revealed the 16-digit code on the back of the card, open the Apple Music app. 
  • Then, tap on the menu button -> Account -> Redeem Gift Card or Code. 
  • Now, enter the 16-digit code and then hit Redeem.

5. What Can You Buy With the Apple Gift Card? 

With an Apple Gift Card, you can buy many things including products and accessories at an Apple Store. For instance, you can use your Apple Gift Card to purchase apps, games, music, and movies. Moreover, you can also use your gift card to make in-app purchases and pay for subscriptions such as iCloud+, Apple TV+, Apple Music, and more.

6. You Can’t Use Apple Gift Card and Apple Account Balance for These Purchases

Now that you are familiar with the things that you can buy using your Apple Gift Card, let’s talk about the purchases that can’t be made with Apple Gift Card and the account balance.

  • Apple Account balance can’t be used to send gifts or gift cards.
  • Apple doesn’t allow using the account balance for certain recurring charges such as AppleCare+.
  • Nevertheless, if you have an alternate valid payment method on file and your Apple Account balance can cover the whole charge, the recurring charge will be deducted from your Apple Account balance.
  • If you have set up a family sharing group on your iDevice, you should be aware of the fact that the family members are not allowed to spend your Apple Account balance. In other words, funds added to your Apple account balance are only available to you.

7. What Can You Buy Using an Apple Gift Card on Your Android Device?

To take full advantage of an Apple Gift Card, you must have an iDevice. On an Android device, there is not much – except an Apple Music subscription – you can buy using your Apple GIFT Card.

8. Make Sure Apple Gift Card is Available in Your Country/Region

Bear in mind that the Apple Gift Card is not available in all countries/regions. Hence, before looking for tips to resolve the problem, make sure that the gift card works in your country.

9. Ensure That Your Card is Not an Apple Store Gift Card 

If you are getting a message that reads “Your card is not valid”, be sure that your card is not an Apple Store Gift Card. Note that Apple Store Gift Cards are available in gold, silver, white, and grey colors. Keep in mind that Apple doesn’t allow redeeming the Apple Store Gift Cards in the App Store or iTunes Store. 

10. Enter Your Redemption Code Manually

If you can’t scan the redemption code using your device camera, I would recommend you enter the redemption code manually. While redeeming a gift card, tap on “You can also enter your code manually. Be sure to input the code that starts with “X”.

If a message appears saying, “Your card has not been activated properly, there is a high chance that the card has not been activated by your retailer. In this case, contact your retailer and get it resolved with them. 

12. Make Sure the Gift Card Has Been Purchased in Your Country or Region

Another important thing that you should do without fail is to ensure that the gift card has been purchased in your country or region. If an alert shows up reading, “The code must redeemed in another shop”, the card was perhaps punched in another country/region. 

It’s worth pointing out that Apple doesn’t allow redeeming Apple Gift Cards or App Store/iTunes Gift Cards outside of the country of purchase. For instance, if you purchase an App Store gift card in the United States, you won’t be able to redeem it in the App Store in India. 

13. Make Sure You Have Stable Internet Connection 

If your internet connection is below par, redeeming the code could be a hassle. Therefore, make sure that your device is connected to a strong and stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection. 

  • On your iPhone or iPad, head over to the Settings app -> Wi-Fi/Cellular and then turn off the toggle. 
  • Now, restart your iDevice.
  • After that, enable cellular/Wi-Fi and try to redeem the code.

If the problem continues, ensure that the App Store/Mac App Store/iTunes Store is running as usual. If it’s down or embroiled in any server problem, you might face issues while redeeming the code.

As I said above, you can take control of the “Unable to redeem Apple GIFT Card” problem by taking care of the preliminary things. However, if the issue continues to haunt you even after you have checked off all the key boxes, it wouldn’t be wrong to point fingers at a software bug. To get rid of the possible bug, try updating the software.

  • To update your iPhone/iPad, launch the Settings app -> General -> Software Update -> Download and install the latest version of iOS/iPadOS.
