Can’t Transcribe Call Recording in iOS 18 on Your iPhone? Fix It!

Thanks largely to the neat implementation, the iOS 18 “Call Recording” feels intuitive. Aside from offering a straightforward call recording functionality, it also transcribes the recording so that you can dive into the details of a conversation at your own pace.

Sadly, many users have complained that they can’t transcribe the call recordings on their iPhones. If the call recording transcript is ill-functioning on your iOS device, we’ve got you covered with quick fixes.

Fix iOS 18 Call Recording Transcript Not Working on iPhone

From the language compatibility to the wrong configuration to an out-of-the-blue software glitch, there could be multiple reasons why the built-in call recording transcript is malfunctioning on your iPhone.

1. Check the Language Compatibility

To begin with, make sure to check the language compatibility as the iOS 18 call recording transcription is currently compatible with only a handful of languages including:

  • English (US, UK, Australia, India, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore)
  • Cantonese (China mainland, Hong Kong)
  • Mandarin Chinese (China mainland, Taiwan)
  • Japanese (Japan)
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Spanish (U.S., Mexico)

2. Switch the Language and Region to “United States”

For many users, switching the language and region to “United States” has worked in fixing the call transcript not working problem. Therefore, we should give a chance to this handy trick as well.

  • To get going, open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Choose General.
  • Select “Language & Region’.
  • Tap “Region” and select “United States”.

  • Now, when prompted, make sure to restart your iPhone.
  • After that, open the Phone app and make a call.
  • Then, tap on the “Call Recording” icon at the top left to start recording the phone call.
  • Once you have recorded the call, tap on the “Stop” button.
  • Your call recording will now be automatically saved in the Notes app. So, open the Notes app and tap on the saved call recording.
  • After that, tap on the “Transcribe” icon at the bottom left corner of the screen and hit the play button. It will instantly transcribe your call recording.
  • Optionally, you can tap on the triple-dot icon at the top right and choose to add the transcript to your note or save the audio to your files.

3. Update Software

If you are still unable to transcribe your call recording, try updating the software on your iPhone as there is a high chance that a bug might be hindering this all-new feature.

  • To do so, go to the Settings app -> General -> Software Update -> Download and install the update.

4. Factory Reset Your iPhone

If the call recording transcript is malfunctioning due to a wrong configuration, resetting all settings may help resolve the issue. For those unaware, factory reset cleans up the entire custom settings but none of the media and data is deleted in the process.

  • On your iPhone, head into Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset All Settings -> input your passcode and confirm.
Reset All Settings

That’s about it! I hope the call recording transcription has begun to work on your iPhone as usual. In my case, taking care of the language compatibility and switching the country region to the US did the trick. By the way, what has managed to rescue you?
