5 Ways to Fix watchOS 26 Update Failed Error on Apple Watch

After a long wait, watchOS 26 has eventually landed on the scene. Bolstered by the Liquid Glass Design and a good many AI-powered features, it’s touted to be a huge update for the Apple Watch. Unfortunately, many users have run into the “watchOS update failed error” on their Apple Watch.

Update failures usually occur due to connectivity issues, insufficient battery, lack of storage, or temporary software glitches. The good news is that most of these frustrating watchOS problems can be fixed quickly.

1. Ensure a Stable Internet Connection

To begin, I’d suggest you ensure that your Apple Watch is connected to a strong and stable Wi-Fi network. watchOS updates rely on a strong connection between your Apple Watch, iPhone, and Wi-Fi network. For those unfamiliar, a strong and stable connection prevents interrupted downloads and ensures the update transfers correctly from your iPhone to the Apple Watch.

2. Charge Your Apple Watch

Another pivotal solution that I’d recommend you try out is to ensure that your Apple Watch has sufficient battery. Note that Low battery levels can prevent watchOS updates from installing.

  • Therefore, make sure to place your Apple Watch on its charger and ensure it’s at least 50% charged.
  • Keep it charging throughout the update process.

3. Free Up Storage Space on Apple Watch

Note that insufficient storage can block watchOS updates.

  • Simply, open the Watch app on your iPhone and head over to General > Usage and check available storage.
  • After that, make sure to delete all the unused apps as well as music to free up as much space on your smartwatch as possible.

4. Restart Both Devices

Temporary software glitches on either the Apple Watch or iPhone can cause update failures.

  • Restart your Apple Watch by holding the side button and sliding to power off.
  • Restart your iPhone as well, then try the update again.

5. Update in Airplane Mode Off & Close Background Apps

Should the problem persist, I’d suggest you update your smartwatch by getting rid of all the background apps. Beware of the fact that Interference from ongoing apps or active Airplane Mode can prevent updates. Disabling Airplane Mode and network-heavy apps ensures uninterrupted communication between devices and Apple servers, allowing the update to proceed smoothly.

Just double-press the Digital Crown to bring up the App Switcher > Swipe left on an app card and hit the red “X” button.

There you go! Updating your Apple Watch should be simple, but minor glitches can sometimes block watchOS 26 installations. By following these five solutions, you can resolve most update failures and enjoy the latest features and performance improvements. Regularly maintaining your devices, keeping sufficient battery and storage, and ensuring a stable network connection will help prevent future update issues and keep your Apple Watch running smoothly.
